Josey’s Story: A Healthy Smile, A Healthier Future

Four years ago, Josey made the decision to change her life. Today, she is four years sober, the proud mother of two young children, and employed at a local fast food restaurant. Living in Nickelsville, Virginia, she drives nearly 45 minutes to Healing Hands Health because she has found more than dental care; she has found a partner in her journey to better health.

When Josey was approved to receive Virginia Medicaid dental benefits, she had trouble finding a provider. Her search eventually led to Healing Hands Health. She became a patient in October 2023.

"I wasn't in a good place, and I wasn't living a healthy life," Josey shared. Years without consistent dental care had affected her oral health, making it important to address existing disease and tooth decay while establishing healthy habits for the future.

Josey committed to her treatment plan, completing needed restorative care, attending hygiene visits every six months, and never missing an appointment. Along the way, she received preventive education that helped her understand the connection between oral health and overall wellness, empowering her to maintain a healthy, disease- and decay-free smile through regular preventive care.

"Josey has been incredibly committed to improving her oral health," said dental hygienist Michelle. "She follows through with every appointment, embraces preventive care, and it's rewarding to see the confidence that comes with a healthy smile."

Today, Josey's healthy smile reflects the progress she has made in rebuilding her life. Thanks to support from the Virginia Health Care Foundation, Healing Hands Health is able to provide increased access to preventive dental care, education, and ongoing support that help individuals who are underserved maintain healthy smiles and better overall health.
