Finding a Doorway to Healing and Hope

Aisha’s Story

In April 2024, when Aisha came to the dental clinic at Healing Hands Health for an appointment to get a tooth filled, the visit turned into something much more—a doorway to healing and hope.

While preparing for the appointment with the dentist, team members noticed Aisha’s blood pressure was dangerously high and immediately referred her to Healing Hands Health’s medical clinic. There, the team quickly realized Aisha was struggling with more than just her physical health. She was grieving deeply after the heartbreaking loss of her infant granddaughter. She was unemployed, behind on her mortgage, and overwhelmed. Aisha wasn’t just physically unwell. She was unraveling.

“It was a group effort to help her,” said Dottie, a long-time volunteer nurse at Healing Hands. Dr. Lloyd addressed her high blood pressure and other physical conditions and brought in Courtney Colobro, PMHNP. Courtney sat with Aisha, counseled her, then set up a treatment and medication plan.

“I didn’t believe in therapy,” Aisha admitted. “I didn’t believe in myself.” But that began to change. “I was telling Courtney about all the things going wrong, and she said, ‘We all face bumps in the road. How do you get past a bump in the road? You drive over it.’ That was a big moment for me. That’s when everything began to shift.”

With regular therapy and medication, Aisha began to identify the emotional barriers holding her back—and the goals that would move her forward. Goals like getting her GED and becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).

Courtney introduced Aisha to Skye, a Community Health Worker, who could help her take the next steps. Skye connected Aisha to the resources to help her obtain a CNA license and enroll in GED classes.

In August 2024, Aisha started working as a Certified Nursing Assistant, a moment she proudly calls a turning point. “The CNA is my dream,” she says. “I’m no longer chasing things to make others love me. I’m doing this for me.”

Today, Aisha is working, caught up on her mortgage, and attending classes to get a GED —all steps toward the brighter future she’s building for herself.

There have been bumps. When work caused her to miss some GED classes, Aisha felt embarrassed and afraid to go back. “I told Skye what was going on, and she didn’t just encourage me—she showed up. Skye asked, ‘How about we go together?’ That meant so much. Skye is an amazing person.”

Today, Aisha is working, studying, healing—and hoping.  She still has tough days but she is not facing them alone.

Aisha is happier and lighter and so thankful for Healing Hands.
